Work Experience with Fèis Rois

Alasdair MacDonaldAll year round Fèis Rois offers work experience placements to both secondary school pupils and students in further education. These placements are voluntary and aimed at young people who are interested in working in the arts sector. Each placement is bespoke and created in partnership with the pupil/student to ensure they gain a valuable experience while with us.

Most commonly placements last one week, however we are happy to offer a more intensive programme lasting up to one month.

Alasdair MacDonald, who under took his work experience placement at Fèis Rois from the 6th-10th October 2014 stated :

I really enjoyed my work experience week with Fèis rois. It was interesting to see how Fèis Rois is run and what it involves, whatever you do here you will enjoy it, even just cutting out tickets was enjoyable! Personally I really enjoyed going out with the tutors and teaching classes, it was so fun teaching the pupils songs and tunes and seeing them have fun puts a smile on your face, at the end of the week Ruariaidh Campbell, Catriona Ramsay and I played at a wee ceilidh at St Clements and was the perfect way to end the week. Everyone here in and out of the office are so nice and I would like to thank everyone at Fèis Rois for such an enjoyable week.

Megan, Sharon, RuairaidhMegan MacDonald, who did her work experience placement from 23rd -27th June 2014 said:

I had a fantastic week doing my work experience at the Fèis Rois office! It was great to see how things are run in the office, where I got the opportunity to organise events and respond to requests for musicians to play at a variety of gigs from community ceilidhs to festivals. I also spent a lot of time learning about film editing and got the chance to edit a video of pupils talking about their weekly ukulele classes which Fèis Rois deliver in their schools. On the Thursday of my week, we headed down to Banff Academy, where I got to contribute to the schools’ lunchtime folk band which Ruairaidh Campbell, Sharon Hassan and Dave Martin run every week. The band got to showcase what they had been doing with the tutors during an evening concert with the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music. It was an excellent night to finish off the week. I would definitely recommend to do work experience with the lovely people at Fèis Rois! Thanks!

Ruairidh Gollan, who undertook his work experience placement with Fèis Rois from 19th - 23rd May 2014, stated:

>"I had a great time doing work experience at Fèis Rois. I learnt a lot about film editing, education work and tutoring. All the staff were really friendly and quite funny! I went along with tutors to music classes and a session, where a learnt more about teaching. I would definitely recommend work experience at Fèis Rois to others."

Amy Henderson & Rory Matheson Rory Matheson, who undertook his work experience placement with Fèis Rois from 13th – 17th May 2013, stated:

‘During the week I spent at the Fèis Rois office I have learnt much more about what happens in the office and the different roles within. I have also worked alongside tutors to gain experience of teaching, and worked on different projects inside the office. During the week at the fèis, I went to a mandolin class and a slow session, both were really good and I learned a few new tunes along the way!’ Rory Matheson, Ullapool High School

During his placement Rory had the opportunity to work alongside our BBC Young Fellow, Amy Henderson. You can listen to a recording taken during the week of them playing Captain Campbell and Jenny Dang the Weaver.
