Apart from learning, there is an important social aspect. The warmth and hospitality and general sense of sharing and celebrating Gaelic culture is wonderful.

Fèis Rois nan Deugairean

Tòrr fhìdhleanBeginners are very welcome at all of our events, and those who already play an instrument or sing will also find the experience very rewarding. We aim to cater for all abilities, right up to accomplished musicians and singers. You don’t need to be able to read music and you don’t need to have any previous knowledge of traditional music to enjoy a Fèis. Workshops are taught by ear with participants learning tunes and songs a phrase at a time. Tutors will give you the sheet music to take home. There is an emphasis on groupwork at the Senior Fèis and all participants have the opportunity to play as part of an ensemble.

Fèis Rois events are fun and friendly. We want to help you improve your playing, grow in confidence and learn more about the Gaelic language and culture.

All of our tutors are experienced, professional musicians, skilled in working with young people. We also have a pool of supervisors and volunteers who help our events run smoothly. Children are supervised at all times and we work in accordance with Child Protection and Health & Safety Guidelines. Our contracted staff and volunteers have all completed Disclosure Scotland applications. If you would like to see copies of our policies or know more about volunteering please contact us.

Ball-coise aig an FhèisThe Fèis Rois Autumn Residential is one of the major highlights of the S1-S6 calendar.  Participants from all over Ross and Cromarty and beyond sign up to this week long opportunity to learn, play and have fun with Scottish traditional music.

The music tuition is based in Ullapool High school and the residential accommodation is based at various hotels and B+B’s in Ullapool.

Our experienced tutors and supervisors work closely together to ensure the young people have a valuable learning and sociable experience.

Morning Workshops

We focus on individual instrument workshops in the mornings, and offer classes at a range of levels in accordion, fiddle, Gaelic song, guitar, harp, piano, pipes, percussion and tin whistle. There is also the opportunity to choose radio production where you will create a Fèis Rois radio show that is aired on Lochbroom FM and over the Fèis Rois website. Another popular morning workshop choice is mixing and recording where you have the opportunity to learn about live and studio sound engineering.

Morning Workshops

The afternoon focuses on ensemble playing and the classes on offer include groupwork for intermediate and advanced musicians, and “beginning to play together” for beginners and improvers. Mixing and recording is also available as an afternoon workshop, as is song writing.
